In Rochefort, take the road to St.Hubert. After a while, take right direction
Hamerenne. Traverse the village and continue direction Han-sur-Lesse. After
1 kilometre, their is a large sinkhole at the right of the road. This is
it. Park the car at the other side of the road.
HISTORY:
It was Marc Jasinsky's team that opened up the entrance in 1955, after a
lot of work.
At the end of the '70ties, Speleo Scientia (Antwerpen) and Speleo Holland
re-explored the cave and re-opened some passages.
In 1982, the CSARI discovered a new part, after a traverse in the roof
of the main gallery.
ACCESS:
Cave closed with an UBS-door and UBS-padlock!.
DESCRIPTION:
Length: 800m, Depth: 72 m
Active cave (a small river flows in the entrance). After the entrance, one
follows a gallery. After a small pitch (2.5m) a second one follows (4m).
At the bottom of this one, the "inferior level" can be followed in two directions.
Upstream is back to the entrance zone. Downstream (rather narrow) leads
to -57m, deepest point of the cave.
Instead of going down the 4 m. pitch, you can also make an 8m-climb just
above it. This will lead you to big rift and another junction:
1) going down: you'll meet a 7m-pitch, then some squeezes that finally
lead to a small river at -56m ("superior level").
2) traverse the rift in the roof, over a distance of 15 m. You'll arrive
in a high gallery. A narrow and oblique 25m-pitch in the floor leads again
to -57 m, where the same small river is met...
RIGGING:
- 8 m climb: 30 m rope (you'll have to pull it through at the return)
- traverse in roof to CSARI-series: you can use the same 30m-rope for it!
- P7: 10 m rope
- P25 in CSARI-series: 30 m rope
