Avalon has discovered many a beautiful cave, and as discoverers we have
always tried to preserve the caves we found, in their original state.
This wasn't always easy, sometimes even impossible. In the beginning,
we made mistakes or we tried out techniques that didn't work.
As often in life, frustrations and successes went hand in hand.
But this learning school resulted, after many years in a very profound
knowledge of how the conserve caves, their formations and sediments.
We would like to teach others what we have learnt... so they can
avoid the same pitfalls and start straight away doing things the right
way. Why? Because, and it is vital to realize this, a cave does
not allow any mistakes at all. Very often, failures cannot be
repaired. Only time can repair things in a cave...but then we
are talking about centuries, not years.
Below you will find two articles in PDF-format (Acrobat Reader needed)
in which many tips and examples are given of how we can take care of
caves and formations.
NB: this originally Dutch article has been translated in French by
Annette Van Houtte (my wife) and reviewed by Georges Michel (CWEPSS).
If anyone ever finds the time to translate it in English, then I would
be very grateful indeed. The caving community would be grateful as well,
I'm sure.
